What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

Frankly, comments should not be active. Yes, I know most people are decent human beings. Yes, I hope you found something in one of these posts you do want to react to. Yes, some of you have expertise and insights that undoubtedly enrich these posts. But I really don’t want to be refereeing an internet comments section. No offense to you good and decent folks, but you’re always about three scrolls down from learning how to make thousands working from home or the latest conspiranoia or some right wing vs left wing argument breaks out. I have other things I would much rather be doing than cleaning that crap off my site. So, no comments for anyone. Sorry.

If comments are active, I screwed up something on the settings and will fix that as soon as I can. The following is my website host’s suggested language and is included for completeness (and legal) sake:

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you managed to upload images to this website, tell me how you did it. That should not be happening either. Again, the following language is suggested by my website host and is included for completeness:

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Cookies

No idea how these get issued by the site, let alone tracked. But it appears the host can do this if you leave a comment (which you should not be able to do). So please read the host’s language below:

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Alright, this you SHOULD read (again, host’s language), because I do embed content from other sites:

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

E-mail

You do have the option to share your email address. I will use this email address to let you know when new posts are up, since I don’t post all that often. That should save you from checking back and being disappointed that there is no new content. Instead, you’ll know via e-mail when it’s worth checking back in. So really, more for your convenience.

I don’t sell your email address. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Analytics

Who we share your data with

No one. Unless they have a warrant. But they are still going to have to show me how to -find- your data, because my internet skillz are not that skilled.

How long we retain your data

No idea. You don’t need to register and should not be able to leave comments, so if I am reading this right, we should not be retaining any of your data. That said, for completeness, the host’s suggested language is below:

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

That’s the host’s suggested language. If you request your data, again, you’re going to have to explain to me how to find it to give it you. This isn’t Facebook. I don’t know how to collect, store or sell any of that.

Where we send your data

Host suggested language: Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
